Rockefeller Center is located in the heart of Manhattan, New York City. It stands a testament to architectural elegance, cultural importance and urban vibrancy. This radiating complex that has become a symbol of New York City’s dynamism and creativity was developed during The Great Depression era by the Rockefeller Family.

History of Rockefeller Center

in 1928, the Columbia University, leased the land where this complex is built. The Construction of New York City’s iconic building began in 1931 during the Great Depression just like The Empire State Building. It was one of the most challenging economic periods of America. So one of the reasons of constructing this majestic building complex was to provide employment opportunities during a time of widespread hardship. Another reason was to revitalize the Midtown Manhattan. The construction spanned almost a decade and was completed in 1939. It was conceived by John D. Rockefeller Jr and was a massive undertaking at that time as it included the construction of 19 commercial buildings spanning from 48th to 51st Streets, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

Architectural Splendor

Rockefeller Center was designed by a team of architects headed by Henry Hofmeister, H.W. Corbett, and lead designer Raymond Hood. The distinctive Art Deco style is featured in the architectural design of the Rockefeller Center as it was very popular during the 1930s. The complex consists of several skyscrapers. The main focal point of this complex is GE Building and it is 70 stories tall. This building was formerly known as RCA Building or 30 Rockefeller plaza. Radio City Hall is another iconic building of this complex that was designed by architect Edward Durell Stone and interior designer Donald Deskey. It was opened in 1932 to general public and is famous for its stunning Art Deco Interiors.

The Center is also adorned by several artworks and sculptures by world renowned artists. Two famous sculptures are Atlas and Prometheus that are made of bronze. It also features many rooftop gardens and green spaces despite the urban landscape. These green spaces provide a pleasant retreat to visitors from bustling city of New York

Most famous among these is Radio City Hall that also serves as the head quarters of famous dance company the Rockettes. This building is also famous for stunning interior and art deco style.

The complex houses multiple corporate offices, dining establishments and cafes and famous boutiques. The famous NBC Studios are also located in the 30 Rockefeller Center. Theses studios are host to very famous tv shows that includes Today and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt ,The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ,Late Night with Seth Meyers and Saturday Night Live.

Another famous cultural icon of a place in New York is Time Square that is famous for its New year events and many other festivities.
